Same-Sex marriage, also known as gay marriage, is an event in which two people of the same gender fall in love and get married.

Same-sex marriage is a very controversial issue in modern politics. According to the left, two ordinary people in love should obviously be allowed to marry regardless of gender, as the 14th ammendment of the Constitution requires equality under law. From a liberal perspective, homosexuals clearly should be permitted to marry, yet an overwhelming majority of states still have not legalized this basic right.

History Edit

Until 2004, no states in America had legalized gay marriage. However, on May 17, 2004, Massachusetts became the first state to do so, following legalization in other countries (the Netherlands, Belgium, and parts of Canada, respectively). Since, many other states have made the right decision, including Connecticut, California (although this has been repealed), Vermont, Iowa, Maine, New Hampshire, Washington, Maryland, New York, and the District of Columbia. Internationally, many nations have also passed laws legalizing same-sex marriage.
